What does the Bible say about salvation?
Among so many confusing issues and questions in the world today, the most important question a person can answer is where they will spend eternity.
The Bible teaches us that every person is born as a sinner. Romans 3:10 says, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." We say wrong words, think wrong thoughts, do wrong things. Even the very best of us are still sinners. There is a penalty for our sin. Romans 6:23 tells us, "the wages of sin is death." We will all experience a physical death, when the soul is separated from the body one day. But death is not just physical. It is spiritual as well. The Bible clearly teaches that Hell exists. Revelation 20:15 says, "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." Hell is the final result of sin, and it is where many will spend eternity.
However, God does not want anyone to die and spend eternity without Him. 2 Peter 3:9 tells us that God is, "not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." God loved mankind so much that He made a way of escape. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to die on a cross and pay the penalty for our sin. If a person will believe on Jesus Christ in this way, the Bible promises an escape from the fires of Hell and a home in Heaven for eternity. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
Other religions and yes, even some Christian denominations, teach that good works are part of salvation. Good works of any kind or in any amount cannot help a person make it to Heaven. In Titus 3:5 it tells us, "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us." Ephesians 2:8 says, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." Salvation is a gift that God wants you to receive by faith, by believing on His Son.
Romans 10:13 promises us, "Whosever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." If you have never trusted Christ as your Savior, you could pray a simple prayer of faith like this: Jesus, I know I am a sinner, and I don't want to spend eternity in Hell. Please forgive my sin and save me. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
When a person believes on Christ, He places a new desire in their heart to get to know Him, to grow in their relationship with Him, to want to live for Him and serve Him, and to be with other Christians. Salvation is the beginning of a new life. Hinckley Ridge Baptist Church would like to help you grow in this new relationship.
